WhatsApp bans WhatsApp PLUS users

WhatsApp has started giving out 24 hour bans to those using a third party Android app to send and receive messages through its service.

WhatsApp Plus - also known as WhatsApp+ - allows you to customize the app with different colours and themes, and also offers the option to block contacts from seeing when you were last online while still allowing you to see when others were.

You have to uninstall the official WhatsApp in order to use the Plus service, and WhatsApp's not happy about it.

Now, when opening the app, the offending users are being greeted with a 24-hour countdown clock and the message: "You're temporarily banned from WhatsApp because you may have violated our terms of service."

Google+ user Dr. Mounib Al Rifai posted this message in the Whatsapp+ Community Group to its 700k members:

“Guys if you are getting this error don’t panic we are working hard to find a fix for the issue as soon as possible in the mean time you can use the normal whatsapp till a fix is found..

Very sorry for this issue as whatsapp is pushing us into a corner.. 

Update 1: for now reinstalling the normal whatsapp won’t get you unbanned till you finish the 24 hour ban.. 

Update 2 : if you didn’t get banned and are using whatsapp+ please uninstall it now and go back to normal whatsapp before you get banned till we find a fix”

Third Party apps like Whatsapp+ can bring unwanted negative attention to the company in the event of any security vulnerabilities in their source code. Whatsapp+ is also reportedly using Whatsapp’s servers which also helps Whatsapp to see exactly who is using the third party add-on. At this time there’s no indication what caused this sudden enforcement of Whatsapp’s user policy, but being apart of a much larger company now, its likely that more stringent measures must be put in place to protect Whatsapp legally.
